Intimate lubricants: everything you need to know to choose and use well

The lubricant is not reserved for people who have a drought problem. It can simply make stimulation more comfortable, reduce friction and improve the use of a sex toy. It can be useful in couples as in solo, regardless of age.

The most important thing is to choose a formula adapted to the intended use and the materials with which it will be in contact.

What are the main types of lubricants?

There are generally three main families: water, silicone and oil-based lubricants.

Water-based lubricants

They are versatile, easy to rinse and compatible with the vast majority of sex toys and condoms. This is usually the simplest choice when you don't know exactly the material of the toy.

They can, however, dry faster than other formulas. Then just put a small amount during the session. Some become slippery again with a few drops of water.

Silicone-based lubricants

They usually stay slippery longer and are more water resistant. They can be interesting for a long session or in the shower.

On the other hand, they are not always suitable for silicone sex toys: depending on the formulation and the material, prolonged contact can alter the surface. So check the manufacturer's recommendation or test on a small area that is not very visible when compatibility is not clearly indicated.

Oil-based lubricants

Oils can offer a lasting glide, but they are not suitable for all uses. Oily products can notably weaken latex condoms. They are also more difficult to clean on certain textiles and sex toys.

For a first purchase intended for several uses, a water-based lubricant often remains the most practical solution.

Oil-based lubricants

Are perfumes, heating effects or cooling effects useful?

Fragrant, flavored, heated, or refreshing formulas can add a different feel, but they contain more ingredients that can irritate sensitive people.

If you are prone to irritation, choose a simple formula, without any marked fragrance. For oral use, check that the product is explicitly intended for this use; «Edible» or «flavored» must be indicated by the manufacturer.

Anesthetic or very desensitizing lubricants are not a good solution to withstand painful penetration: pain is a useful signal and masking it can lead to injury.

How to use a lubricant?

There is no exact quantity. Start with a small dose on the area to be stimulated and on the sex toy or penis, then add as soon as the glide decreases.

How to use a lubricant?

Good lubrication should make the movements fluid without causing a burning sensation. During anal penetration, it is particularly important to use enough since the rectum does not produce natural lubrication comparable to that of the vagina.

With a masturbator, spread a little lubricant at the entrance and in the canal. With an external vibrator, a thin layer is often enough to make movements softer on the vulva or clitoris.

How do you know if a lubricant is still good?

The first reference remains the expiry date and the duration of use after opening indicated on the packaging. The durations are not the same for all formulas.

Discard the product before this date if you notice:

  • a color that has changed markedly; ;
  • an unusual smell; ;
  • A texture that has become lumpy, separate or very different; ;
  • A damaged or contaminated container.

Close the bottle tightly after use and avoid touching the mouthpiece directly with dirty hands or with a sex toy already used. Good preservation limits contamination.

Do you have to be lacking in natural lubrication to use it?

No. Natural lubrication varies with excitement, hormones, cycle, menopause, stress, certain medications and many other factors. It does not measure desire on its own.

Even when a person naturally lubricates, a product can reduce friction during a long session, facilitate the use of a toy or improve comfort in certain positions.

Should I clean the inside of the vagina after use?

No. After a report, it is usually enough to clean the vulva, i.e. the external part, if you feel the need. The vagina is self-cleaning and vaginal douche is not recommended to remove lubricant.

A small amount of water-based lubricant remaining in the vagina is normally discharged naturally with secretions.

Lubricant and pregnancy project

Not all lubricants are equivalent when a couple tries to conceive. Some formulas can reduce sperm mobility in the laboratory and products containing spermicide are obviously unsuitable for a pregnancy project.

If you need a lubricant during this time, look for a formula specifically presented as design compatible or seek professional advice. « water-based» does not automatically mean «sperm-friendly».

The good reflex

A good lubricant should solve a concrete problem: less friction, more comfort and more pleasant use of the sex toy or during the report. Choose it according to your skin, the type of condom and the material of the toy, then do not hesitate to put it back as soon as the glide decreases.

Before first use, also test a small amount on the skin if you are sensitive. A burning, itching or irritation sensation is a reason to stop and rinse the affected area.
